While BlogWorld has been around for over three years (first year in New York), this is the first time that WordPress was on the show floor. Yes, amazing as it seems, the world’s most popular blog software has avoided the BlogWorld Expo until now.
WordPress set up a nice big display right at the front entrance, making them impossible to overlook. While that was great for them, it may have been a headache for their people staffing the booth since they had to put up with the Infolinks boogie every 30 minutes.
We welcomed WordPress to BlogWorld by asking them the most brain busting questions we can come up with: What is WordPress? The answer is in the video.
While we’re on the subject of WordPress, I should remind everyone that version 3.1.3 is now available for download. This is a security update so everyone must upgrade.
The Blog World Expo show floor featured about 100 exhibitors showing off their wares. As you can imagine, trying to capture the attention of show goers can be a challenge. Infolinks came up with a novel approach to grab people’s eyeballs. Do a boggie dance!
As part of their African Safari promotion, Infolinks hired a bunch of dancers to do a traditional African dance every 30 minutes. While the show goers enjoyed the performance, I’m not sure how the booth next door felt about it after the third or fourth boggie.
In addition to the Infolinks dance, the video features Syed and I getting into trouble (again) by throwing footballs at people. Enjoy!
From today, new European laws come into force that dictate how web users can be tracked online.
The changes will require technology companies, retailers and other suppliers that track information online (usually via cookies) to seek ‘informed consent’ from web users in order to do so.
Whilst the UK Government has declared a 12 month moratorium on enforcement of the laws there remains much confusion within the online community with what this means and what companies should be doing to ensure the services they offer to both consumers and clients are not adversely affected while meeting the core criteria of the Directive.
Digital Window has therefore compiled a document that outlines all the issues, what industry is doing to address them and what you should be doing to ensure you’re compliant. There is also a list of useful documents and articles for your reference.
Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to make money off your blog without running a single banner ad? Well, if you were at my panel session at BlogWorld Expo in New York, then you would have learned how it’s done.
The session featured myself, Zac Johnson and Syed balkhi. The panel was moderated by David Risley. Zac, Syed and I shared our experience with monetization methods that does not involve the banner ads. Most bloggers think that the only way a blog makes money is by banner advertising. This is so far from the truth. The banner ads on my blog accounts for only 1/3 of my blog income.
We had a nice turn out for our panel and the audience asked a lot of great question. Hopefully, BlogWorld will make the session recording available soon. In the mean time, check this the great introduction David gave us. Unlike the other sessions, our’s is fun and off the wall.
Lewis Howes opened the monetization track of BlogWorld Expo New York with a power-packed session on how to make money with webinars. Lewis started in the Internet marketing business with an ebook about LinkedIn. He was writing about LinkedIn on his blog and monetizing his sites using the standard methods. However, things didn’t really got going until he did his first webinar.
Lewis’s first webinar made him $6,300, which is not bad for an hour’s work. It was a webinar about how to leverage LinkedIn. Lewis’s second webinar had only three PowerPoint slides for a ninety minute presentation but still made $12,500.
The Webinar Business Model
The basic webinar model is to offer an hour or more of free information and then sell the audience something at the end. The model works better than most because the conversion on a webinar is much higher. During his session, Lewis gave his ten sure-fired steps to make money online with a webinar.
The webinar needs to be an experience
Optimize the registration page
Leverage social media – create an event for the event
Promote the webinar 4 to 7 days in advance
Start seeding before the webinar starts (give shout outs to attendees)
Make sure you start on time
One slide per minute
Over delivery as much as possible
Make it about your audience
Make the offer irresistible
Follow up
After the presentation, Lewis opened the floor to questions. Syed and I couldn’t help but to go up and ask him a stump the Lewis question. The look on his face was priceless.

The opening keynote of BlogWorld Expo was delivered by Gary Vaynerchuk, Jeffrey Hayzlett and H.P. Mallory. Mostly, I just took note of what Gary said because Gary tends to take over any presentation with his high power presence.
Social Media has become a critical driver of business in more than just the marketing and PR departments. Social Media is changing the rules for sales, customer service , product development and more. It’s propelling leading companies and radically changing the face of entire industries.
What are the important realization both new and old media companies need to understand to enable themselves to compete in this brave new always on 24/7 media world? Do customers really control your brand image more than you do? How can you effect change within your organization to keep up with this media revolution, even when it isn’t seen as your role within the company to do so?
The keynote was designed to answer those questions, but it was mostly used as a session on how to publish your own book, whether by self publishing like H.P. did or going through a publisher like Gary and Jeffrey did. I came away impressed and I also got Gary to give me a signed copy of his new book.
With effect from 1 July 2011, the Supervisory Board of zanox, the leading European performance advertising network, appoints Joachim Piroth to the Executive Board of the zanox group where, as Chief Financial Officer (CFO), he will be responsible for the fields of Finance and Controlling. In doing so, he will strengthen the executive management team around CEO Philipp Justus.
Joachim Piroth (45) joined zanox in June 2010 as VP Finance & Controlling from BT Germany, the German network and IT service provider of the British Telecommunications Group. At BT Germany, he headed the controlling, accounting, procurement and billing departments as CFO since 2006. A communications engineer by background, Piroth has been active in the telecommunications industry since 1992. After stops at Mannesmann Mobilfunk/D2 (today, Vodafone D2) and Mannesmann Arcor, he was in charge of finance at LambdaNet AG in Germany from 2000 until 2004 as its CFO and, until 2006, headed the finance department of Versatel in the same position.
Philipp Justus, Chief Executive Officer of zanox: “I am delighted about Joachim Piroth’s appointment to the Executive Board. During the past year, he has proven his capabilities as a finance leader and has pressed ahead with significant projects within the framework of our company’s internationalisation.”
“The growth of the zanox group and all organic and geographic expansions are accompanied by substantial demands on the overarching finance team. In this respect, we are glad we can count on Joachim Piroth as a member of the Executive Board of the company,” says Ralph Büchi, Chairman of the Supervisory Board.
For now, the appointment of Joachim Piroth represents the final building block in the zanox Executive Board: Philipp Justus (41, Chief Executive Officer), Christian Kleinsorge (47, Chief Sales Officer) and Daniel Keller (39, Chief Technology Officer) have been responsible for the global management of the zanox group since March 2010.
BlogWorld & New Media Expo opened last night with a networking party and mixer at 404NYC Restaurant. At first I thought the 404 was a play on the 404 page not found but it turned out to be the address of the place: 404 10th Ave.
The opening night mixer was co-hosted by New York Entrepreneurs Business Network and featured a book signing by Gary Vaynerchuk, Miss USA contestants, finger food, wine tasting and a bunch of companies trying to hock their wares. The only thing the party was missing was an open bar.
The party started off kinda slow but picked up as the evening went on. As networking events go, this one was pretty good. There was no music playing. Networking was the main thing. I got a chance to connect with a lot of old friends and meet up with a bunch of new ones.
Today, the show floor will open and I’ll be heading in there to see what kind of free stuff I can pick up. My panel session starts at 3:45. See you there!
